Moving to 3D

Victor Bradley and Thomas Riddle

The operational changes alluded to in Change management assume that your organization is currently in one of the following situations with regard to CAD technology.

  • You use manual drawing board design (no CAD)

  • You use CAD for 2D design only

  • You use CAD for 3D (wireframe, surface, or solid) but are using it essentially as you would a 2D only CAD system

  • You use a CAD system for 3D Solid Modeling but are aware (or perhaps unaware) that you are under utilizing this capability

Many organizations in these categories are unaware of the fundamental operational differences between a 2D drafting system and a 3D system. A 3D system includes hardware, software, and live-ware (people).

This section of tips addresses more of the live-ware issues of a 3D system; the part you can not buy, plug in and let run on auto-pilot. This requires guidance, direction, and management during implementation, ramp up, and production phases, as well as the inevitable expansion phases which follow as other technologies and

applications are implemented.
